Live Your Dream Award – Cortlin Gilmer & Anina Chen
This is the signature program of Soroptimist. This cash award assists women who serve as primary wage earners for their families with financial resources to offset costs associated to attaining higher education or additional skills/training in order to support their family.
Ruby Award – Susan Keeping
This award honors women of Surrey/Delta who work to improve the lives of women and girls through their professional and/or volunteer work. This year’s recipient is honored for her pioneering in bringing attention to the desperate financial needs of women and children struggling in survival poverty in Surrey/Delta.
Violet Richardson Award (to be presented at our Girl’s Conference 2016)
This award is presented to a high school girl who continually volunteers and gives back to her community. The recipient receives one half of a cash award with the other half going to the charity of her choice. We are currently accepting applications for this award.
We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia
Dream It, Be It – Girl’s Conference: We are currently in the planning stage for our SECOND Dream It, Be It Girl’s Career Conference this fall. This one-day conference is for high school girls (ages 14 – 18).
Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls will help girls grow up to be strong, successful, happy adults. Dream It, Be It targets girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. It provides girls with access to professional role models, career education and the resources to live their dreams. Soroptimist International of Surrey/Delta, in partnership with Girl’s Empowered, will work with girls in a conference setting to provide them with the information and resources they want and need to be successful. The topics covered include career opportunities, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles to success and how to move forward after setbacks or failures.
Professional women in various careers/occupations/trades are invited to set up a “table” where they will be available for girls to seek out, speak with about their career choices, how they got there, what obstacles they encountered, and an overview of their education and career journey. Additional follow-up opportunities may include a mentor program where girls will be matched with professional women to gain more insight into a specific career through the following ways:
